    📅 Release Year: 2008 | 💰 Release Price: ~350 €

    📊 Units Sold: ~2M

📰 Why this phone matters: The Nokia N78 is a 3G smartphone made by Nokia. It was first introduced at the Mobile World Congress on 11 February 2008, and was launched on 26 May 2008 for &eur;o;350 before taxes and subsidies. It runs on Symbian 9.3 (S60 3rd Edition, FP2) and was marketed as a more cheaper Nseries device inside a compact, light body. The phone is compatible with the N-Gage 2.0 mobile gaming service.

It is the successor of the N73 and its design shares similarities with the N81, N82 and N96. Despite its relatively low price, the Nokia N78 does still pack numerous standard Nseries features such as A-GPS, HSDPA and Wi-Fi. It has a touch-sensitive Navi wheel like on the N81, and was the first Nokia (and among the first overall, along with Sony Ericsson W980) to feature an FM transmitter. Its keypad is hidden in idle mode and lights up when a key is pressed. It did not however become popular like the N73 was. Later in 2008 the Nokia N79 was introduced.

The Nokia N78 was also the first Nokia phone with the new extended guitar-based version of the Nokia Tune.

  • Sony Ericsson K660i CHEN: Lime White Prototype AP2

💎 Rarity Index: S (Ultra Rare)

⭐ WOW Factor: K660i was one of the most iconic mid-range 3G candybars from Sony Ericsson in 2008, notable for its color accents and web-focused features

👁 Evaluation in my collection: Great – 9.5/10

    Sony Ericsson Code Name: CHEN

    ⏱ Life timer: N/A | 📦 Boxed: NO

    📅 Release Year: 2008 | 💰 Release Price: N/A

📊 Units Sold: ~1M (final units)

📰 Why this phone matters: This unit is a fully working Sony Ericsson K660i prototype built on the CHEN platform and finished in a striking lime and white color scheme that gives the phone a crisp, almost experimental aesthetic. The internal label confirms its origins: a prototype build AP2 from week 51 of 2007, carrying a prototype IMEI and the mandatory Prototype not for sale and Not Type Approved markings. The chassis and keypad display a pre-final finish, with the lime navigation bar and white keypad standing out as a rare color combination that may never have been intended for retail release.

The device has the full layout of the final K660i, including the 5-way joystick, QVGA display, media keys and the iconic Sony Ericsson design language of the late 2000s. Yet, as a prototype, it represents a development milestone rather than a commercial product. The preproduction color tones, engineering batch identifiers and prototype hardware references capture the exact moment when Sony Ericsson was refining the K660i before mass production. A fully functional unit in this condition is especially rare, making it a prized collectible and an authentic piece of the brand’s engineering history.

  • Sony Ericsson W980

    💎 Rarity Index: C (Common)

👁 Evaluation in my collection: Good – 8.5/10

    ⏱ Life timer: N/A | 📦 Boxed: NO

    📅 Release Year: 2008 | 💰 Release Price: ~420 €

    📊 Units Sold: ~1M

📰 Why this phone matters: The Sony Ericsson W980 is a clamshell mobile phone that was announced on 10 February 2008. It was their flagship Walkman device at the time. The W980 is packed with many features, including 8-gigabytes of flash memory, HSDPA and a built-in FM transmitter (one of the very earliest on the market). With the clamshell closed the user can use the Walkman with an external touch screen illuminated with orange lights which will flash to the rhythm of the music being played for a few moments. This feature runs while the phone is being used but turns off after a few moments when the phone becomes idle.

It also has a 3.2 megapixel camera. Picture DJ allows one to edit the photo’s light settings, colour and other visuals without needing to connect to a computer. The phone will also rotate a portrait photograph if it is taken in landscape mode with the photo fix feature. This will also automatically adjust the lighting of the photo – if it is too dark it will make it lighter. 3G video calling is also made possible with a forward-facing camera built into the screen of the phone.
